Video clip showing the initial images from a videofluoroscopy examination
132.1 The following video clip shows the initial images from a videofluoroscopy examination. The patient has had brainstem surgery and presented with a chest infection. This initial video clip shows the ingestion of water soluble oral contrast of a low viscosity and demonstrates poor oro-pharyngeal coordination. There is poor bolus control and this leads rapidly to aspiration of the contrast into the trachea (positioned anteriorly). This examination was undertaken with the speech and language therapists and physiotherapists. After this initial phase of the examination there are further stages using increasing contrast viscosities and postural changes to try and find strategies to minimize the risk of aspiration.
